Python Reserved Words - Python Keywords

Python Reserved Words

Here is a list of keywords that are reserved in Python — they cannot be used as identifiers (variable or function names, class names, etc.). This list is based on Python 3.8 and later versions. For the most current list, refer to the Python documentation.

  • False - Represents the false value of the Boolean type.
  • None - Represents the absence of a value or a null value.
  • True - Represents the true value of the Boolean type.
  • and - A logical operator in Python.
  • as - Used to create an alias while importing a module.
  • assert - Used for debugging purposes.
  • async - Used to define an asynchronous function.
  • await - Used to wait for the result of an asynchronous operation.
  • break - Breaks out of the current closest enclosing loop.
  • class - Used to define a new user-defined class.
  • continue - Continues to the next iteration of the current loop.
  • def - Used to define a function.
  • del - Used to delete a reference to an object.
  • elif - Used in conditional statements, same as else if.
  • else - Used in conditional statements.
  • except - Used with exceptions, what to do when an exception occurs.
  • finally - Used with exceptions, a block of code that will be executed no matter if there is an exception or not.
  • for - To create a for loop.
  • from - Used to import specific parts of a module.
  • global - To declare a global variable.
  • if - To make a conditional statement.
  • import - To import a module.
  • in - To check if a value is present in a list, tuple, etc.
  • is - To test if two variables are equal.
  • lambda - To create an anonymous function.
  • nonlocal - To declare a non-local variable.
  • not - A logical operator.
  • or - A logical operator.
  • pass - A null statement, a statement that will do nothing.
  • raise - To raise an exception.
  • return - To exit a function and return a value.
  • try - To make a try…except statement.
  • while - To create a while loop.
  • with - Used to simplify exception handling.
  • yield - To end a function, returns a generator.

For more details on each keyword and how they are used in Python, refer to the Official Python Documentation.

This list covers the reserved words in Python that are part of the language syntax. These keywords have special meaning and are integral to the structure of Python code.

Snippet from Wikipedia: Python (programming language)

Python is a high-level, general-purpose programming language. Its design philosophy emphasizes code readability with the use of significant indentation.

Python is dynamically typed and garbage-collected. It supports multiple programming paradigms, including structured (particularly procedural), object-oriented and functional programming. It is often described as a "batteries included" language due to its comprehensive standard library.

Guido van Rossum began working on Python in the late 1980s as a successor to the ABC programming language and first released it in 1991 as Python 0.9.0. Python 2.0 was released in 2000. Python 3.0, released in 2008, was a major revision not completely backward-compatible with earlier versions. Python 2.7.18, released in 2020, was the last release of Python 2.

Python consistently ranks as one of the most popular programming languages, and has gained widespread use in the machine learning community.
