EmEditor

Cloud Monk's Review of the Buggy and Way Overly Complicated Text Editor to AVOID called EmEditor.

SO BUGGY!!! I no longer recommend this product due to numerous keyboard shortcut bugs that the author refuses to fix even after I spend 5 hours documenting them in several emails. His English is very poor so he doesn’t understand what I say. And then asks me to re-explain it differently. Ugh!

It is fine for mouse only use, but if you use only the keyboard and the standard Windows editing keyboard shortcuts, you will be very frustrated.

Yutaka Emura is creator of this very overly complicated text editor. I highly recommend to AVOiD it if you use keyboard shortcuts instead of constantly mousing.

Notepad Plus Plus is FAR superior.

The author is horrible at creating bugs, fixing them and then reintroducing the same bugs again over several years. This is developer Yutaka Emura.

OLD REVIEW:

EmEditor is by far the best lightweight extensible commercial text editor for Microsoft Windows. It was developed by Yutaka Emura of Emurasoft, Inc.

It includes full Unicode support, 32-bit and 64-bit builds, syntax highlighting, find and replace with regular expressions, vertical selection editing, and is extensible via plugins and scripts.<ref>

</ref> The software has free trial and after that it downgrades to free version, which still can handle huge files and regex.<ref>EMEDITOR FREE</ref>

Features

Unicode support

EmEditor supports Unicode and provides tools for work with various character encodings. These features include automatic encoding detection, byte order mark support, file reload with a different encoding, and detection of encoding errors. EmEditor can use any encoding supported by Windows and easily converts from one encoding to another. The program opens Unicode file names and searches for Unicode characters.

Large files

EmEditor is capable of working with very large files.1) For large files up to 248 GB, rather than opening them in memory, EmEditor “spills them out” into disk space. For files over 248 GB, it uses its Large File Controller to edit separate sections of the file.

Plug-ins

EmEditor is extensible via plug-ins written in C/C++. The editor's API is available, so that users can write their own plug-ins.

The following plug-ins are installed with EmEditor by default:

  • HTMLBar
  • Open Documents
  • Projects
  • Search
  • WebPreview
  • WordComplete
  • Word Count

An optional 32-bit plug-in for CSE HTML Validator support is also available.<ref>CSE HTML Validator plug-in (32-bit) Retrieved 2012-10-03</ref>

Scripting macros

The program is scriptable using the Windows Script Host. The program's scripts are written in either JScript or VBScript. EmEditor can generally be scripted in any scripting language that supports Active Scripting. The program includes powerful macros.<ref>CNET Download.com Review Retrieved on 3 March 2009.</ref>
