/usr

/usr is a standard high level directory where programs and applications not essential to the operation of the computer are kept. Its name is short for user [programs], and might be confused with /home by some Linux newbies. Compare with /bin and /sbin.

Common subdirectories of /usr include:

  • /usr/local
  • /usr/games
  • /usr/sbin
  • /usr/X11
